Osteoarthritis (OA) is a significant chronic disease anda common presentation in general practice. Over 50% ofpeople over the age of 65 years have radiological evidenceof disease and approximately 10% of men and 18% ofwomen have symptomatic OA.1Joint pain and reducedmobility cause considerable impact on quality of life. Withno current cure for this condition, general practitionersare left with a range of management options aimed atoptimising quality of life and self management, preventingacute episodes, delaying complications and preventingprogression of the condition.
To assist the GP in deciding which of the many possiblepharmacological and nonpharmacological options to recommend totheir patients, The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners(RACGP) published the Guideline for the non-surgical managementof hip and knee osteoarthritis in 2009.2While the recommendationsin this guideline focus on the hip and knee, many of therecommendations are relevant to OA in other sites.
